What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
A new discipline to be visible in AI search engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity: GEO. Here are the differences from SEO and the application steps.
Being on Google's first page isn't enough anymore. Users ask their questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overview — and these engines answer in a single paragraph. If your brand isn't in that paragraph, the user can't see you.
SEO vs GEO
SEO is being visible 'in the search engine'. GEO is being visible 'in the answer engine'. SEO targets ranking; GEO targets being cited.
What to do for GEO
- Give clear answers to clear questions on every page (FAQ format is strong).
- Back claims with sources and numbers.
- Add schema markup — especially FAQPage, HowTo, Article.
- Summarize content: answer in the first paragraph, details below.
- Show authority: author bios, organization info, external references.
Conclusion
GEO isn't a new channel — it's an era-adapted layer on top of SEO. If you already have SEO work, GEO is about 20% extra effort. But its visibility impact will keep growing over the next 12 months.
